本劇的劇情開始於 1989 年 6 月 3 日夜晚，中國政府對在天安門廣場的示威群眾實施暴力清場。當時一位年輕的美國攝影記者在士兵用錘子砸他所在酒店房間門的同時捕獲到解放軍的坦克車開進天安門廣場這一歷史鏡頭。二十幾年後，他負責報導總統選舉，這次的總統選舉充斥著中國廉價勞工和美國就業崗位外流至中國的爭論。隨後，他沉迷於中國報紙留下的關於王鵬飛的神秘信息並開始了一場尋找照片中坦克人真實身份的行動。
